Colorado Castle inspired by Biltmore Estate sells for $ 9.5 million

A huge hillside castle in Evergreen, Colo., Inspired by George Vanderbilt’s Biltmore estate in Asheville, NC, changed hands for $ 9.5 million, a record price for the affluent small town .

The 35-acre property was last listed at $ 11.99 million with LIV Sotheby’s International Realty in December 2020 and signed a contract in October. The sale closed on Wednesday for a final price of $ 9.5 million, according to entry records.

The buyer is a Californian family, according to Emily Henderson, who handled the ad with colleagues, Whitney Cain, Jennifer Davenport and Rosemary Nigh at LIV Sotheby’s International Realty.

“The buyer was drawn to the style of the house,” she said. “It has a truly fantastic setting and location with great views of the snow cap, lots of privacy and space. It all played into the buyer’s decision.”

Mansion Global could not independently determine the identity of the buyer as the transaction has not yet appeared on ownership records.

The vendors, who are in financial services and could not be reached immediately for comment, began building the castle in 2007 and expanded it in 2015, according to Henderson.

Inspired by Biltmore, the French chateau-style limestone mansion was built around a central courtyard with statues carved in stone, dormers, sloping roofs, turrets, lighted colonnades of columns and sculptural ornaments, according to the list.

The four story mansion has a marble lobby and marble floors throughout. To the right of the entrance hall is a large room with a bespoke limestone fireplace and glass walls, as well as a kitchen. A large staircase leads to the second floor, which includes another reception room and a gallery. The top two floors host the six bedrooms, four of which are en suite. The second most expensive is a 19.25-acre mountain estate with a 6,455-square-foot residence that sold for $ 5.44 million in June, according to the Multiple Listing Service.
