This $2.2 million castle-style home rules the neighborhood of Marietta, GA

At the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in Marietta, GA sits a royal house with turrets.

This is a 13,714 square foot modern era chateau that really stands out in the range of upscale homes in the area.

Built in 1995, the chateau is listed for $2,195,000 and was a passion project for the owners Clark and Terri Ullom.

They knew they wanted to build something extraordinary and set out in search of ideas, which they found on a road trip through England and Scotland. The couple came home inspired after staying at various castles and mansions.

“We took a massive amount of photography inside and out, and kind of merged all of those ideas together in the house we built,” Clark explains. “I don’t know if we knew exactly what we were looking for, but when we saw it, we knew.”

The result is a castle with five bedrooms, five full bathrooms and plenty of living space. A covered walkway connects the main part of the house to a shed with a bedroom and a full kitchen. Everything stays true to the chateau theme, including the solid mahogany front door, which comes from a real chateau.

It “has really big iron knobs on it, which makes it difficult for people to put their shoulder against the door and kick it down,” Clark says of the door’s majestic origins.

Other castle-like details of the home include a 25-foot-tall ceiling in the great room, Honduran mahogany throughout, imported fireplace mantels, and bronze chandeliers.

Stone lions stand guard, bare teeth, outside the front door. For Clark, fierce felines embody a certain symbolism.

“It signifies power and greatness, and I think it makes a statement of the American dream come true,” he says.

The Ulloms were drawn to the idea of building a castle because they wanted a house that would stand out.

“I was captivated by the fact that castles weren’t just boxes,” Clark says. “They had turrets and curves and spiers and so many elements of architectural beauty.”

He adds: “I took it to a level that I probably didn’t expect, but it ended up being like that. Too often I see a lack of color and a lack of detail. So when we built this, we wanted to bring the warmth and power of the English countryside – and a sort of element of royalty – to a home in Metro Atlanta.

The king and queen of this castle raised their family here but are ready to move on to the next phase of their lives.

“I’ll be sad to see him go because there were so many memories there,” Clark says. “I built this house from scratch and I know every plank of wood, every brick and every stone. It’s time for someone else to take advantage of it.
